This is sunshine week in the US. It’s to promote a higher profile about the importance of open government and freedom of information. And in Michigan, some say local governments have become less open, and bills putting new Freedom of Information Act requirements on them, are before state lawmakers. However, they’ve seen little action. Kathy Barks Hoffman of the Michigan Coalition for Open Government says the bills are needed, because among other things, some local governments are charging excessive amounts for copies of public records. She also says local governments too often drag their feet in coming through with requested information.
