Summit Lake Wildfire Controlled

U.S. Forest Service officials say the Summit Lake wildfire in eastern Baraga County has been controlled.

Efforts by firefighters to corral the remote blaze were assisted by recent rain and snow. Firefighters have effectively secured the west and southwestern flanks of the fire where the priority has been to protect private lands, and describe it as 90 percent contained.

The temporary closure order of the northern half of the McCormick Wilderness has been terminated.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the area, and reinforce fire lines when needed. Minimal fire activity is reported, with some smoldering continuing in dead and downed debris.

The fire was discovered October 18th in the McCormick Wilderness, in the remote eastern portion of L’Anse Township, about 12 miles north of Michigamme. It has consumed 328 acres.

An investigation into how the fire started continues.
