One of the biggest challenges to fighting child food insecurity occurs in the summer when students are away from school. In 2024 the Michigan Department of Education plans to expand the summer food service program’s network of providers and resources available to kids in the summer. By starting the Rural Non-Congregate option last year the program was able to test its impact before full implementation this summer. Last year Met Up and Eat Up served close to 4.5 million meals to Michigan children across 1,400 sites around the state. BHK Child Development alone served close to 7,000 meals. The MDE encourages community partners and schools able to provide a pick-up location to contact the program for more information. Locally Houghton Portage Township Schools and Hancock Public Schools have begun accepting students as a part of the summer meal program. The first pick-up days for those school districts will occur in the second week of June.
