Study Says Houghton County Residents Getting High Value For Their Property Taxes

Property taxes are one of the primary ways counties collect revenue to pay for the services offered to residents.

In Houghton County, residents can at least be assured that their money is being put to good use, according to a national review.

SmartAsset, a New York based financial technology company, puts Houghton County at number four in Michigan for getting the most “Bang for their Buck” on property taxes.

This is the second consecutive appearance that the county has made in the top five of the annual list.

In addition to property taxes, the study looked at the quality of local schools and local crime rates to see where people were seeing the most value.

The study said the average property tax rate was 1.42 percent with Houghton County schools among the best in the state and a low crime rate in the area.

Leelanau County was number one overall in Michigan. Wayne County was at the bottom of the list.
