It certainly is the sweetest summer event held in the Copper Country.
The Chassell Strawberry Festival begins today as Lions Club members serve up delicious locally grown strawberries on soft spongy shortcake.
Though late spring frost did a number on the strawberry crop this year, Lions Club President John Mackrain says there’s no need to worry.
Of course, there’s much more to do at the festival than just eat strawberries. The first day features the fish boil, children’s parade, the Strawberry Queen Pageant and the Strawberry Dance at the VFW Post 6507.
Then on Saturday there is the 5k/2k Trail Run/Walk, the Strawberry Festival Parade, boat rides aboard Michigan Tech’s research vessel Agassiz and the famous chicken barbeque served up by the Chassell Fire Department and First Responders.
And that’s just the tip of the strawberry! You’ll find a complete list of events at http://www.coppercountrystrawberryfestival.com/.
