Still Time To Sign Up For Swedish Or Kantele Class At FAHC

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to speak Swedish, or play the 5-string kantele, you’ll never have a better opportunity than right now.

Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center, as part of its spring semester community programming lineup, is offering classes in Swedish language and kantele, starting this month.

Fulbright scholar Sam Knapp, an Iron River, Wisconsin native, will offer Swedish language instruction on Mondays at 5:30 p.m., and the class is now slated to begin February 8. The class will meet for 10 weeks, with each session lasting about an hour. This class requires a minimum of eight students to be offered, so it’s important that you express your interest in advance. Call 906-487-7549 to get your name on the list. Registration is $50 per student.

Then, beginning on February 17, local musician Kris Kyrö will offer a class in 5-string kantele. This class is open to any interested person, regardless of musical experience. The only necessary skill is being able to count to five. The class will meet on Wednesdays for eight weeks, for about one hour each session. Advance registration is encouraged because space is limited, so please call 906-487-7549 to reserve your seat in the class.

The FAHC’s community enrichment programming is aligned with the center’s mission of preserving and promoting Finnish-American and Finnish culture in North America, and keeps with the roots of Finlandia University, which is the only existing institute of higher education in the U.S. founded by Finns. The FAHC is located at 435 Quincy Street in Hancock.
