Tornados are rare in the Copper Country, which is why tomorrow’s test of the EAS Tornado Warning is so important.
The statewide test is conducted by the National Weather Service in cooperation with the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division.
At 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, participating local radio and television stations will broadcast the test.
This may be accompanied by a test of tornado sirens in many areas.
Houghton County Emergency Manager Jack Dueweke says when people hear the warning, they should check to make sure their NOAA radio is working.
The drill also serves as a reminder to have a plan in case of a real emergency.
Schools have been practicing tornado drills for decades but most businesses do not.
Individuals and private businesses are encouraged to develop a plan using tips that can be found on the Michigan State Police website.
