The number of Michigan residents participating in a net metering program continues to grow, according to the state’s Public Service Commission (MPSC).
Judy Palnau of the MPSC says, under the program, customers that use solar power and produce excess electricity, give that power back to their utility in return for a credit.
Palnau says since the program began in 2008, it’s added 1,787 customers, bringing the total number to 1,840.
She says residential customers account for about 81-percent of the total net metering program.
The state’s two largest utilities, Consumers Energy and DTE, host most of the participating customers.
