State to Residents: Keep Your Eyes Peeled for the Asian Longhorned Beetle

The state is hoping you can help keep an insect that burrows into maple trees and destroys them out of Michigan.

Julie Crick, an educator at Michigan State University Extension, says the Asian long-horned beetle – which is black with white spots and has a blue antenna – leaves behind some evidence when it burrows in to a tree.

That includes a pencil-sized hole, sawdust and maybe some sap coming out of the hole.

She says now is the best time to spot one as the adult insect can be found outside of the tree.

The invasive insect isn’t a problem now which is why the state wants you to keep an eye out for them.
