State Stocking Fewer Salmon in Lake Mi due to Reduced Food Supply

The state is stocking fewer salmon in Lake Michigan due to concerns over food supply.

Jay Wesley with the Department of Natural Resources says the spread of invasive species like quagga and zebra mussels resulted in fewer alewives, a major food source for salmon.

The DNR says about 560,000 salmon were stocked in Lake Michigan last year, two-thirds less than three years ago.

Wesley says if they did not stock fewer salmon they could see more disease outbreaks or a collapse in the salmon population.
