State Senator Will Resign Over Assault Charges

State Senator Virgil Smith will resign from office as part of a plea agreement in a case involving an alleged assault of his ex-wife.

As part of the deal, the Detroit Democrat will plead guilty to malicious destruction of property of $20,000, a felony, and serve 10 months in jail.

He will also have to resign from his Senate seat.

The charges stem from a May 10th incident in which the 35-year-old lawmaker is accused of assaulting his ex-wife and shooting her 2015 Mercedes-Benz.
