State Reports Flint Water Progress

The State of Michigan is reporting progress in clearing the Flint public water system of the lead contamination that made national headlines two years ago. The Department of Environmental Quality’s latest tests at schools, day care and elder care facilities found that only 1.5 percent were still above the federal maximum level, and 80 percent contained no detectable levels of lead. Tests on the water system as a whole have shown lead levels at about half of the maximum standard for the past 18 months. Service lines have been replaced at 6,247 residences, and none of them have shown detectable lead levels since. State officials say they are continuing a door-to-door campaign to encourage all Flint water system customers to have their water tested, and take advantage of programs to improve water quality.
