State Officials Warn of Utility Phone Scams

Another spate of fraudulent phone calls across the state has prompted the Michigan Public Service Commission to remind utility customers not to fall victim to scams. If you receive a call about a utility bill, remember these points…
– Utility companies never demand that you make immediate payments using prepaid credit cards.
– Utility companies never use scare tactics, such as threatening to cut you off within hours.
– Utility companies never ask for your name, address, date of birth, or Social Security number over the phone.
– Utility companies never collect payments at customers’ homes or businesses.
– Utility company employees always carry identification, and never coerce their way into your home.

If you believe you’ve provided information to an imposter, call your bank, the local police department, and your utility provider. You can also file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at www.michigan.gov/ag and the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357.
