Governor Gretchen Whitmer is hailing the announcement by the drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech that their COVID-19 vaccine is showing promise.
Pfizer officials said the inoculation proved 90 percent effective in early trials, with no serious safety concerns observed.
The company plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization for use of the vaccine.
Officials say they could have 20 million doses available by the end of the year, and more than a billion next year.
Pfizer has indicated that the vaccine will be produced at its facility in Kalamazoo.
