Whitmer Extends COVID Emergency; Signs Order Protecting Workers

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended the COVID-19 Declaration of Emergency through September 4th.

Noting that every region in Michigan has seen an increase in the coronavirus infection rate, Whitmer said it was important to do everything possible to control the growth of the disease, including wearing masks, and maintaining social distancing.

Whitmer also noted that federal unemployment assistance has ended, causing many residents to feel obligated to return to work, even if they are not comfortable doing so, or feel ill.

She signed an additional executive order prohibiting employers from discharging, disciplining, or retaliating against employees who choose to stay home when they or their close contacts are sick.

Employers are directed to treat such employees as if they are on medical leave.
