Whitmer Extends COVID-19 Emergency

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended Michigan’s ongoing State of Emergency to October 27th.

Whitmer has used the State of Emergency to issue executive orders to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview Tuesday morning on KBear 102.3, Whitmer said the orders have helped Michigan come back from being one of the hardest-hit states early on…

“Studies have shown that we’ve saved thousands of lives. Our positivity rates are lower than most other states in the nation. 87 percent of our economy has re-engaged, and we’re one of the top-10 recoveries in the nation.”

Whitmer said challenges that would overturn her emergency authority would put the state at risk…

“The backbone of all the work we’ve done are the executive orders that I’ve had to issue. Each weigh heavily on me. There’s no question that we’ve made a lot of sacrifice to get here. We can’t let it have been made in vain, and so, if these powers are stripped, we could be in a very dangerous situation.”

She pointed to neighboring Wisconsin, which has taken a more lax approach to the virus, and which now has the third-highest COVID-19 infection rate in the nation.

Whitmer also extended four executive orders through October 31st. They will…
• Allow continued use of e-notarization and e-signatures;
• Extend limitations on those who may enter health care facilities, residential care facilities, and juvenile justice facilities;
• Extend enhanced cleaning and testing protocols for jails and state prisons;
• Continue protections for workers and customers at food selling establishments.
