Whitmer Creates Anti-Poverty Task Force

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has created a task force to develop recommendations to help lift Michigan families out of poverty.

The Michigan Poverty Task Force will operate within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. It will include directors or other representatives from a number of state departments and agencies.

The executive order also requires that an advisory council be established for the task force, which must include three legislators from counties affected by poverty – two from urban areas, and one from a rural area – and three state residents who are either impacted by poverty, or are working with impacted communities.

A recent report released by the United Way said that 43 percent of Michigan households struggle to afford necessities such as housing, childcare, food, technology, health care and transportation. One in five Michigan children live in poverty.
