Today is School Count Day

Today is Michigan School Count Day.

Attendance taken at schools today will weigh heavily in determining how much aid schools get from the state. This year, it won’t be as significant as it usually is.

Typically, fall Count Day attendance is weighted 90 percent against a second count taken in February to come up with the official figure.

This school year, the figure derived from the October and February count days will be merged with last year’s number – with last year’s number weighted 75 percent, and this year’s number 25 percent.

The formula was devised to ease the blow on schools who may have lost students to other learning options because of COVID-19 concerns.

Still, it’s important for students to be present today – either in class, or through the online option being offered by their district of choice. They’ll be counted either way.

Students who will be absent today can still be counted, whether that absence is excused or unexcused. Check with your school district administration to find out how to proceed.

Each student counted is typically worth more than $8,000 in state aid to a school district.
