State Republicans Press Budget Plan

With bipartisan talks at a standstill, Michigan’s Republican-led House and Senate moved forward yesterday with budget proposals of their own.

Bills approved by various committees would provide little increase for higher education, a larger boost for K-12 education, and a significant boost for clean drinking water funding.

Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she’ll look at the ultimate result, but will veto it if it doesn’t match her priorities for the state.

Republicans have offered to add a half-billion dollars from the general fund to help fix Michigan’s crumbling roads. They have not detailed what would be cut to free up that money.

Whitmer has rejected the offer, saying that a long-term road funding fix is needed.
