Personal service providers generated the most consumer complaints recorded by the Michigan Attorney General’s office in 2019.
The category that includes everything from beauty shops to tax advisers jumped from seventh place up to first place on the list, driven by complaints against the Family Fitness Center chain in West Michigan. Last spring, Family Fitness was ordered to reimburse customers $190,000 for money it collected on canceled memberships.
The Telecommunications, Cable and Satellite TV category finished second on the list again this year. Complaints increased 20 percent, mostly about robocalls. Rounding out the top-10: Motor Vehicles and Automobiles at number three, with used car dealers garnering most of the complaints; Credit and Financial Concerns; Retail; Internet, which includes most online retailers; Landlord and Tenant; Contractors; Health Service Providers; and Travel, which includes travel agents, tour companies and time-share companies.
The Attorney General’s office received more than 9,200 written complaints about business practices last year.
