Snow Day Forgiveness Inches Closer

Relief could come as soon as today for school districts facing extensions of their schedules because of an abundance of snow days.

The state House and Senate worked out details of a proposal that would exempt missed school days between January 29th and February 1st, when the region was hit by a polar vortex. The state typically allows for up to six missed days because of emergencies each year. Districts can apply for another three days under certain circumstances.

The final version of the bill does not include a provision Democrats wanted, which would have guaranteed that hourly support staff receive pay for the extra days missed.

The measure has been advanced to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is expected to sign it.
