Legalization of recreational marijuana use in Michigan was supposed to cut down on illegal drug trafficking.
So far, it hasn’t.
At a news conference in Detroit yesterday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced that the amount of illegal pot they have seized coming into Michigan this year is 17 times greater than the amount they had collected at this time last year.
That includes seizures made at all five of Michigan’s monitored ports of entry, including the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, along with the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel in Detroit, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Officials say the black market is skyrocketing because legal cannabis production hasn’t kept up with demand.
Agents said the number of guns being smuggled into the state has also more than doubled.
They blame that on fears that restrictions on gun ownership may be put in place, if the Democrats gain control of the government in the upcoming election.
