Nessel: Nassar Investigation Still Active, Not Suspended

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says a comment by her communications director that her office was suspending its investigation into the Larry Nassar sexual misconduct scandal at Michigan State University was not accurate.

In a statement released yesterday morning, Nessel said she remains “deeply committed to finding the truth about who knew what about Larry Nassar at MSU.”

More than 325 women have accused Nassar of sexually assaulting them while he was a sports physician for MSU and the USA Gymnastics program. Most were minors at the time. He pleaded guilty to nearly two dozen assaults, and to additional child pornography charges, and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

There remain questions as to how far-reaching the university’s coverup of Nassar’s behavior was. Former MSU Dean of Osteopathic Medicine William Strampel is spending a year in jail for his role. Charges are pending against former MSU president LouAnna Simon, and former MSU gymnastics coach Kathie Klages.

The statement that the investigation was being suspended was released by spokesperson Kelly Rossman-McKinney earlier this week. She said the action was being taken until a way could be found to review around 6,000 documents that MSU says are privileged, and to interview former interim university president John Engler.

In her statement yesterday, Nessel said they’re frustrated by that impasse, but the investigation remains active.
