Today is Veteran’s Day, a day to honor service men and women who have served and who are currently serving in the Armed Forces.
Some city, county and federal offices will be closed.
On Thursday, Congressman Fred Upton and Michigan U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow announced legislation that will allow President Obama to award the Medal of Honor to South Haven resident James McCloughan for his acts of heroism during the Vietnam War.
McCloughan saved the lives of ten members of his platoon during a battle in May 1969.
Medal of Honor recipients must be honored within five years of their heroic actions, but the Defense Department recently recommended McCloughan receive the honor.
The legislation waives the five year requirement.
Upton says McCloughan is an American hero and after 50 years, it’s time he finally receives the highest recognition for the deeds that made him a hero.
