Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson wants to add a third gender option to Michigan’s driver’s licenses.
13 other states have already added a gender-neutral choice to their IDs.
Groups representing the LBGT community have been requesting the change since shortly after Benson was elected.
Benson has made changes to make it easier for citizens to change their gender designation. A significant software update will be required to open up a third option.
Spokesman Jake Rollow recently said that they hope to accomplish that by early next year.
It’s not known what the actual designation would be. Most of the states that have adopted it use the initials “M,” “F” and “X.”
