U.S. Senator Gary Peters has added his voice to those demanding the immediate removal of President Donald Trump.
The Michigan Democrat yesterday called on Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, saying Trump violated his oath of office when he incited a violent attack on the Capitol.
Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow also indicated that she would support impeachment, or a move by the cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment.
All of Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Representatives have now called for the president’s removal. Michigan’s Republican House members have criticised the insurrection, but generally remain loyal to Trump.
Meanwhile, the cabinet that could decide Trump’s fate is getting smaller.
Michigan’s Betsy DeVos submitted her resignation as Education Secretary yesterday, saying that “violent protestors [sic] overrunning the U.S. Capitol” was “unconscionable,” and telling the president that there is no mistaking the impact his rhetoric had on the situation.
DeVos is one of the few cabinet members who had stayed in place throughout Trump’s term. Her wealthy family is one of the most influential in Michigan Republican politics.
Transportation Secretary Elain Chao has also announced that she will resign in protest. She is the wife of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.
