The Republican Party’s continued resistance to Joe Biden’s presidential victory has driven one of its highest-profile Michigan members from its ranks.
U.S. Representative Paul Mitchell resigned from the party yesterday, and asked House leadership to re-list him as an independent.
Mitchell represents the 10th District, which covers Michigan’s Thumb area.
In a letter to national party chair Ronna McDaniel, he recounted his support for President Donald Trump over the past four years, but said “If Republican leaders collectively sit back and tolerate unfounded conspiracy theories and ‘Stop the Steal’ rallies without speaking out for our electoral process… our nation will be damaged.”
Mitchell is retiring from Congress next month. He acknowledged that his decision is largely symbolic, but added, “we all know that symbols matter.”
Mitchell had been mentioned as a potential GOP gubernatorial candidate in 2022.
