Meningitis Vaccinations Encouraged

With college starting in just over a month for thousands of Michigan students, the state Medical Society and Health Department is urging young people to make sure they are immunized against meningitis B.

The push for the vaccinations comes just a week after Central Michigan University senior Kristy Malter died from meningitis while working as a camp counselor in southeast Michigan.

A recent survey by the Kimberly Coffey Foundation shows 81 percent of parents were not aware that there are vaccines to protect against 5 different strains of meningitis.

The report also says 79 percent of parents did not know that their child is not fully immunized against all 5 types unless they had each of two unique meningococcal vaccinations.

An official with the Health Department says while some students are vaccinated against four types of meningitis, many high school and college aged kids may not yet be vaccinated against Meningitis B.
