Medical Marijuana Rules Relaxed; Recreational Applications Begin Friday

With discussions continuing across Michigan regarding the introduction of recreational marijuana sales, the state has streamlined processes and reduced fees for those involved with medical marijuana.

Marijuana Regulatory Agency Executive Director Andrew Brisbo says the cost of a two-year license will drop from $60.00 to $40.00.

A number of other fees have been eliminated, including the charges for background checks, and updating or replacing registry cards.

Email can now be used to communicate with the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program, and the email sent to new card qualifiers can be used as verification immediately, until the card arrives by snail mail.

Meanwhile, the state will begin accepting applications for recreational marijuana sales and growing licenses on Friday.

Applicants will need to submit a $6,000 non-refundable application fee.

Background checks will be performed on all company owners, and the state will review the business plan, physical facility, financial fitness, and proposed employees.

Once the hoops are cleared, the state will issue the appropriate licenses, with an additional fee collected for each license. The current application is posted on the state’s website here.

Officials say the application has been modified since it was first posted a month ago, and encourage applicants to use the most recent version.
