Republican John James has finally conceded the U.S. Senate race in Michigan.
Three weeks after the election, and 24 hours after the Board of State Canvassers voted to certify the results, James congratulated Democrat Gary Peters on winning re-election by more than 92,000 votes.
He wished Peters and his family “good health and safety this season and in the new year.”
It is James’ second loss in a U.S. Senate run in two years. He fell to Debbie Stabenow by a larger margin in 2018.
Along with President Donald Trump, James had alleged that there were serious problems with Michigan’s election. No proof of fraud was ever offered, and several court cases were thrown out because of lack of evidence.
The concession would seem to indicate that Republicans will not request a recount in Michigan. Under state law, recounts must be requested within 48 hours after state certification is completed – that would mean close of business today.
Recounts cannot be requested before the vote is certified.
