Flags at Michigan state facilities will fly at half-staff today to honor a Southeast Michigan police officer who died in the line of duty.
Sergeant Steven Splan of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety suffered a heart attack after helping clear trees that were knocked down by a storm, to reopen a street for emergency vehicles.
He was 46 years old, and is survived by his wife and four daughters.
Private property owners who fly flags are also encouraged to honor Sergeant Splan. Flags should be returned to full-staff tomorrow.
