Governor Whitmer Signs Auto Insurance Reform

After years of debate and stalemate, Michigan finally has a law reforming the auto insurance system in the state.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill into law Thursday morning calling it a “clear step forward” saying the legislation “will provide relief for every Michigan driver.”

A key factor in the law is the ability of drivers to choose their level of insurance provided by the company in the case of an accident.

Drivers with their own qualified insurance plans can choose to opt out altogether.

The legislation also aims to reduce fraud within the system in an effort to bring lower premiums to Michigan residents, who pay the highest rates in the country.
