Former State Rep Sentenced for Role in Sex Scandal

A former Michigan state representative will probably not spend time in jail, after pleading no contest to a charge of trying to have a state employee help cover up his extramarital affair.

Todd Courser has been sentenced to 12 months of probation, along with 45 days in jail. He can avoid the 45 days, though, by completing the 12 months cleanly, and by doing 90 hours of community service. He is also required to pay $1,125 in fines, fees and court costs.

The Lapeer County Republican began an affair with fellow Tea Party member Cindy Gamrat shortly after both were elected to the State House in 2014.

When news of the fling became public, Courser asked an aide to send a misleading email to thousands of Republicans.

He resigned from the House in 2015. Gamrat was expelled.
