An FBI agent with a history of working with Native American tribes in Michigan has been appointed the state’s first coordinator for missing and murdered indigenous persons.
During his career, Joel Postma has investigated missing children, runaways, drug crimes, and deaths in Indian Country in the Upper Peninsula. He also served on the Tribal Multi-disciplinary Team and Child Protection Team, and created a ride-along program to facilitate relations between tribal law enforcement and the FBI.
The new position is part of a DOJ effort to respond to missing and murdered Native Americans nationwide.
Postma will coordinate efforts involving the 12 federally recognized tribes in Michigan.
He is a 1992 graduate of Lake Superior State University.
