A federal judge puts a hold on Michigan’s ban on straight-party ticket voting.
U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain said in his ruling that the state’s law banning straight party ticket voting places a “disproportionate burden” on the rights of blacks to vote in the fall election.
Mark Brewer is the former Michigan Democratic Party chair who represented the plaintiffs who sued the state over the law.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson the defendant on the case says she will appeal.
