State May Have Overpaid Former Prison Food Vendor

An audit of the Michigan Department of Corrections and its former food contractor found the state may have overpaid for meals at prisons.

The audit found DOC paid Aramark $3.4 million even though there was a dispute over how many meals were served to prisoners.

The audit found meal counts the state kept were different than what Aramark had on record.

In some cases the meal counts at some prisons were higher than that prison’s inmate population.

Aramark was replaced in the fall with Trinity Services Group.
