State House To Vote On DPS Funding Bill

The Michigan House is slated to vote Thursday on a nearly $50 million emergency funding bill that will keep Detroit Public Schools open for the rest of the school year.

The $48.7 million will come from the state’s tobacco settlement fund.

DPS’ new transition manager told lawmakers last week the district will run out of money by April 8th if lawmakers don’t step in and help.

A bill to extend the Financial Review Commission’s oversight to include the district is also up for a vote today.

Legislative rules require bills that pass one chamber to sit for five days before they can be voted on by the other chamber.

If the House passes the supplemental spending bill today it will line the legislation up for a vote in the Senate next week before lawmakers depart for spring break on March 24th.
