Some of the money the state collected from sales of the “Save Our Lights” specialty vehicle license plates is coming to the Copper Country. The plates raise cash to help preserve historic lighthouses. The Keweenaw Land Trust will receive nearly 20-thousand dollars ($19,970) for work at the Manitou Island Light Station. The project will stabilize and rehabilitate the 96-foot-long Manitou Island wooden dock structure and crib that extends into Lake Superior. Projects are chosen through an annual competitive application process. Organizations receiving the grants must contribute 50 percent of the award amount as matching dollars to the project.
