Michigan’s acting state fire marshal is offering some tips to keep your holidays safe and free from fire.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, one of every three home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems and one in six are caused by a heat source too close to the tree.
To avoid a holiday blaze, Acting State Fire Marshal Michael Deprez says it’s important to make sure you have a fresh-cut tree and keep it properly watered.
Deprez also says to check your holiday lights and make sure they are not frayed or broken.
If you decorate your home with candles during the holidays, never leave them burning when unattended and make sure your home has working smoke alarms.
Also key, according to Deprez, is having a practiced home escape plan in case of fire.
