Stanton Township Man Dies While Swimming In Lake Superior

A Stanton Township man is dead after a weekend swim with his granddaughter.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says they received a call about a man drowning in Lake Superior near Stanton Shores Road in Stanton Township just after 11:00am Saturday.

They were met by Stanton Township first responders at the scene and began looking for the missing man.

They soon found the body of the 87-year-old man about 30 feet from shore in about six feet of water.

First responders brought him to the shore but he was unresponsive.

Life saving measures were performed on him by the first responders and Mercy Ambulance personnel.

He was taken to U.P. Health System Portage where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man was swimming with his 11-year-old granddaughter when he began having breathing problems.

His granddaughter tried helping him, but he told her to get back to shore and when she did, she turned back to look for him but he was gone.

She ran to a nearby residence for help and someone there called 911.

Stanton Township First responders, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the DNR all assisted at the scene.
