The sponsor of a series of bills to increase the speed limit on some interstates and highways in the state hopes to revive his legislation in a few weeks.
State Representative Brad Jacobsen says, under the legislation, the speed limit would go up to 75 miles an hour on rural sections of interstate and 60 miles an hour on rural stretches of highway.
There’s also a provision allowing the speed limit to go up 80 on interstates, which he says only impacts newly constructed interstates. Jacobsen says a new interstate hasn’t been built in Michigan in over a decade.
The legislation was voted on in February but fell short of the votes needed to pass.
Jacobsen hopes to bring the bills up for a vote again a few weeks after the legislature returns from spring break.
