Soo Locks Repairs To Take Longer Than Expected

One half of the Soo Locks remains closed and repairs are taking longer than first expected.

The MacArthur Lock in Sault Ste. Marie was taken out of service in late July after it was found its gates were not closing properly.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says there is a problem with how the gates are anchored at the top.

Repairs were expected to last from 10 days to two weeks. They now don’t expect the lock to re-open until August 19.

Until then larger freighters transiting from Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes will have to use the Poe Lock and smaller ships will use the Davis Lock.
