Solar and Wind Ordinance Public Hearing at Hancock City Council Meeting Tonight

The Hancock city council will hold two public hearings.

The Solar and Wind ordinance will be open to public input in regards to proposed solar and wind energy sources in city limits. The code would regulate the type, size, and placement of solar energy panels and wind turbines with different rules for residential and industrial areas.

Industrial installations would need to include a decommissioning plan for removing equipment and restoring the landscaping after the end of the project’s life.

Residential equipment may not be installed in a front yard, and residential wind installations are restricted to bladeless or vertical axis turbines. No windmill-style generators would be allowed in residential areas.

After the solar and wind ordinance public hearing is complete, they will open the public hearing for the city budget.

After these hearings are complete and there has been the review and approval of the agenda, the council will be open to public comment as usual.

The Administrative report will include the new hire of a deputy clerk, a published article on Finlandia from the Chronicle, reminders about the Kids on the Green event and Bridgefest.

In New Business, the council will consider the following:

  • The appointment of Alan Salmi to the Hancock Transit Local Advisory Council
  • The approval to request grant funding for the reconstruction of Minnesota street between Ethel and Michigan streets
  • The approval of the adoption of 2023-2024 budget
  • Approve the millage rates of 13.2 for the General Fund, .800 for the Fire Department, .800 for the Police Millage, and .800 for the Recreation Millage
  • Adopting the wind and solar ordinance

The public hearings and meeting will begin at 6pm at the Hancock city hall.
