Snyder Signs Year-End Bills

A bill sponsored by State Senator Tom Casperson was one of a handful of new laws signed into effect by Governor Rock Snyder late last week.

Casperson’s bill establishes a new date for price increases to take effect for motorcycle endorsements. The cost will rise from $13.50 to $16.00 for original endorsements… and from $5.00 to $7.00 for renewals. The increase was to have taken effect last fall. The new effective date will be January 20th. A $2.00 increase in motorcycle registration fees will be delayed until February of 2019.

Snyder also signed bills that will…
– allow for more visibility signage to be added to school buses,
– permit owners of some commercial vehicles to purchase fundraising license plates,
– ensure that first offense minor-in-possession defendants who fail to appear in court or fail to comply with a judgment are treated the same as other civil infraction offenders,
– lower the number of unpaid parking tickets a driver can accrue before having their driver’s license held for renewal from six to three, and
– name a four-mile portion of I-96 east of Lansing as the “Mitchel A. Kiefer Foundation for Distracted Driver Awareness Highway.” Kiefer was an 18-year-old Michigan State Student who was killed on that stretch of highway last year after his car was rear-ended by a distracted driver. The foundation established by his family and friends is working to provide distracted driver education, and highway safety devices.
