Michigan Governor Rick Snyder plans to use $1.2 million in taxpayer money to pay lawyers for work on the Flint water crisis, while Attorney General Bill Schuette is seeking $1.5 million to pay for an investigation into the crisis.
Both requests are on the agenda of the State Administrative Board, which is meeting later this month.
The Democratic leader in the Michigan Senate, Jim Ananich, D-Flint, says the requests are a kick in the teeth to taxpayers.
He says sending every resource the state can to removing pipes and protecting kids should be the priority, not covering legal fees.
And House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel, D-Auburn Hills, says taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for a criminal defense lawyer for Snyder.
On Schuette’s request to pay his 20 member investigative team, Attorney General Spokeswoman, Andrea Bitely, says with a crisis of this magnitude making families’ daily lives a struggle and shaking the trust of citizens in their government, they will not do a half-baked investigation on the cheap.
