Snowmobiler Falls Through Ice

A snowmobiler is safe after having to be rescued from Lake Gogebic.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office says they got a call around 1:30pm Thursday that a snowmobiler had fallen through the ice on the lake.

Authorities say Bonduel, Wisconsin resident Gregory Lee Strayer was traveling from the Hoop ‘n Holler Bar across Lake Gogebic, when he went through unsafe ice located on the East side of the lake.

The ice is marked as unsafe in that area of the lake.

Strayer entered the unsafe area and he and his snowmobile broke through the ice.

He was then rescued from the ice by Deputy from Ontonagon county, a Michigan State Police Trooper of the Wakefield post and a Michigan DNR Conservation Officer.

Strayer was evaluated by Beacon Ambulance and the snowmobile was removed by Howie’s Towing of Bergland.

No other injuries reported.

Strayer was cited for Careless driving.
