LANSING – A proposal to require employers to provide paid sick time to Michigan workers will appear on the November ballot. The Board of State Canvassers approved the petition language and signatures on Friday. If passed by voters, employees could earn up to one paid hour for each 30 worked, up to nine days per year, depending on the size of the business that employs them.
A proposal to raise the minimum wage in Michigan did not clear the Board of Canvassers on Friday, failing to advance on a 2-2 vote. The Michigan One Fair Wage proposal would gradually increase the minimum hourly rate to $12.00 per hour by 2022, and include tipped workers under the minimum wage umbrella by 2024. Those who voted against the proposal said there were ambiguities in the language. Because of the tie vote, a court will decide whether or not the proposal will be placed on the ballot.
