Sheriff’s Department Cracks Down on School Bus Violators

Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies will be watching extra closely this week for drivers who ignore the flashing red lights on school buses.

Sheriff Brian McLean says his department is taking part in a national effort called Operation Safe Stop. Extra patrols will be assigned to monitor school bus routes.

McLean says the issue here isn’t as bad as it is in some parts of the state, but there are problem areas…

“One of the hotter spots is M-26 there, with the four lanes and no divider in the middle. Technically, the cars in both lanes going the opposite way are supposed to stop, so that’s probably the one we get the most complaints on.”

Anytime you see a driver ignore the flashing red lights of a school bus, you should report the incident to 9-1-1.

Violators can be sentenced to fines up to $500, up to 100 hours of community service, and will have three points placed on their driver’s licenses.
