Shanty Removal Dates Approaching

It’s hard to imagine with the weather we’ve been having, but the Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers that the dates for removing their ice shanties are approaching.

In the Upper Peninsula, shanties must be removed by midnight March 31.

In the northern Lower Peninsula, ice shanties need to be removed by midnight March 15.

In the southern Lower Peninsula, shanties must be removed by midnight March 1.

Shanties should already be removed from downstate’s Lake St. Clair.

The DNR says anglers are required to remove shanties as soon as the ice is unsafe to hold them, regardless of the date. After the mandatory removal dates, shanties may be placed on the ice but must be removed daily.

Shanty owners who allow the structures to fall through the ice face up to 30 days in jail, fines or both.
