Sentencing for Copper Mine Trespassers

Two men charged with breaking into an abandoned Keweenaw County mine shaft were sentenced in district court Thursday. 21 year old Dylan Stubenrauch of Calumet and 21 year old Frederick Bryce of Allouez pled no contest in Keweenaw County District Court to one charge of trespassing. They were sentenced to six days of community service or 12 days in jail and court officials said the pair will opt for community service. Stubenrauch and Bryce allegedly cut through a metal cover to enter the Gratiot Mine Shaft north of Mohawk in March. Police said the pair attempted to remove a large piece of copper from the mine shaft.
